Your next customer may never visit your website. They will ask an AI for the best option in Tampa and act on the answer. Here is how to become that answer, from someone testing it across her own businesses.
More and more people are skipping the ten blue links entirely. They open ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Google’s AI answers and ask for the best med spa, roofer, or bookkeeper near them, then act on whatever comes back. If your business is not part of that answer, you are invisible to those customers, no matter how good your website is. I have been running experiments across my own businesses to figure out how to become the recommendation rather than a footnote, and the encouraging news is that the fundamentals are not exotic. Here is what actually moves the needle in 2026.
What GEO and AEO really are (and why it is still SEO)
You will see the terms generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization thrown around as if they are a brand-new discipline. They are mostly good SEO with the volume turned up. Google itself has said the way to show up in AI features is to keep making genuinely helpful, trustworthy content. There is no secret code to paste in. The businesses that get recommended are the ones an AI can clearly understand and confidently vouch for.
How AI assistants decide who to recommend
An AI does not know your business the way you do. It builds an answer from what it can find and trust: your own clearly structured information, your reviews, your Google Business Profile, and, crucially, what other credible sources say about you. If your details are inconsistent, your reviews are thin, and no one else mentions you, the AI has nothing solid to stand on and will recommend someone it understands better. Being talked about in the right places is now a ranking factor for machines, not just people.
The signals that actually matter
Not every signal carries the same weight. Here is what actually moves an AI to name you, ranked roughly by leverage:
- Third-party mentions (highest leverage). Being named in local news, an industry roundup, a “best of” list, or a trade publication. Assistants trust what credible outsiders say about you far more than what you say about yourself — one genuine news mention can outweigh ten of your own blog posts.
- Reviews, in volume and freshness. A steady stream of recent, genuine reviews at a strong rating. As a rough bar, about 25+ Google reviews at 4.3★ is where businesses start surfacing in AI answers; 100+ at 4.5★ earns confident, repeat recommendations.
- A complete, active Google Business Profile. Correct category, hours, services, photos, and recent posts. It is the single most-read source for “near me” answers — and Bing Places matters too, since ChatGPT’s browsing leans on Bing.
- Consistent name, address, and phone everywhere. Identical details across 20–30 directories (Google, Yelp, Bing, Apple, BBB, industry sites). Conflicting info makes an AI distrust all of it.
- Answer-first, structured content. Pages that state the answer in the first sentence under a clear heading, so a model can lift it cleanly. If the answer is buried in sentence four, it may never get extracted.
- Schema and a real About page. LocalBusiness, FAQPage, and Review schema so your services, location, and hours are unambiguous — plus a named owner or author the AI can attribute the business to.
A 72-hour get-found-by-AI checklist
You can move the needle in one focused week. Work top to bottom — the earlier items carry the most weight.
Day 1 — Fix your foundation
- ☐Claim and 100% complete your Google Business Profile: category, hours, services, and 10+ real photos.
- ☐Also claim Bing Places, Yelp, and Apple Business Connect.
- ☐Make your name, address, and phone identical everywhere you appear online.
Day 2 — Make your site AI-readable
- ☐Add or rewrite an About page with a real, named person behind the business.
- ☐Rewrite your top service page answer-first: the question as a heading, the answer in sentence one.
- ☐Add LocalBusiness, FAQPage, and Review schema (a plugin like Yoast or Rank Math can generate it).
- ☐Confirm GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and PerplexityBot are not blocked in your robots.txt.
Day 3 — Build proof and trust
- ☐Text — don’t email — your five happiest recent customers a direct Google review link.
- ☐Pitch one local reporter, newsletter, or “best of” list to get named as a source.
- ☐Publish or refresh one page with a “last updated” date and one genuinely original stat or tip.
Test whether AI already recommends you
Before you change anything, find out where you stand. Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity and run the same prompts a real customer would, then note whether you appear, who does instead, and which sources the AI cites. Re-run monthly and log it in a simple spreadsheet — that is your GEO scoreboard.
- “What are the best [your service] in [your city]?”
- “Who should I hire for [your service] near [neighborhood]?”
- “Recommend a [your service] for a small business in [region].”
- “Is [your business name] any good — what do people say?”
When a competitor keeps coming up, click into the sources the AI cites. Those are the exact listicles, directories, and review pages you now know to get listed on.
How local businesses win here
This is where small, local businesses have an edge over big national brands. AI answers for local questions reward specificity and trust signals that a hyperlocal business can build faster than a faceless chain. Own your neighborhood, your niche, and your reviews, get mentioned by local outlets, and be the clearest, most trustworthy option in your category. I am doing exactly this across my own businesses right now, and the pattern is clear: the businesses that are easy for AI to understand and verify are the ones it hands to customers.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Make your business easy for AI to understand and trust: a complete Google Business Profile, consistent information and schema, a real About page, steady reviews, question-and-answer content, and mentions on other credible sites.
What is GEO or generative engine optimization?
It is optimizing to appear in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT and Google’s AI. In practice it is strong, helpful SEO plus clear structure and trust signals, not a separate secret technique.
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. It builds on the same fundamentals. Helpful, well-structured, trustworthy content that ranks in search is also what AI assistants pull from when they recommend businesses.
How do I show up in Google AI Overviews?
Answer real questions directly and clearly, use clean structure and schema, keep your business information consistent, earn reviews and mentions, and make sure a real person and About page stand behind your content.
The bottom line
AI search is not coming, it is here, and it is already deciding which local businesses get recommended. You do not need to chase every trend. You need to be the clearest, most trustworthy, most talked-about option in your category, which is good marketing by any name. Do the fundamentals well and you become the answer, not an afterthought.
