Nonprofit Gigi’s Playhouse Tampa Advances in Baker & Emily Mayfield Giving Bowl, Highlighting the Power of Community-Driven Support

Written By Amanda Bucalo, Board Member at Gigi’s Playhouse Tampa

As Tampa Bay continues to grow as a collaborative and community-driven region, organizations across sectors are finding new ways to come together in support of meaningful causes.

Gigi’s Playhouse Tampa, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center providing free educational, therapeutic, and career development programs, has advanced to Round 3 of the Baker & Emily Mayfield Giving Bowl, a Tampa Bay-based fundraising initiative where community engagement directly determines funding outcomes.

Hosted by the Baker & Emily Mayfield Foundation, the Giving Bowl brings together a select group of local nonprofits in a bracket-style competition designed to rally community support and generate meaningful funding for organizations making an impact across the region.

While structured as a competition, the Giving Bowl is ultimately a reflection of Tampa Bay’s philanthropic spirit. For organizations like Gigi’s Playhouse Tampa, success is driven not by a single donor or institution, but by the collective participation of individuals, business leaders, and community partners.

This year, the Playhouse was selected by Ryan Pepiot, creating a unique intersection between professional sports and community impact. With the Tampa Bay Rays based in St. Petersburg, the campaign highlights the broader Tampa Bay connection, where visibility, influence, and purpose align to support local organizations.

Gigi’s Playhouse Tampa operates on a model that removes financial barriers to access, offering all programs at no cost to families. These programs include:

• Literacy and tutoring initiatives that build academic confidence
• Career development programs that prepare participants for independence
• Life skills training that supports long-term growth
• Social programming that fosters connection and belonging

Behind each of these programs is a network of volunteers, families, and community supporters who make the work possible.

Sustaining a no-cost model requires consistent community investment, not only through donations, but through awareness, volunteerism, and leadership engagement. It also reflects a broader shift in how communities support inclusive infrastructure, ensuring that individuals of all abilities have access to opportunities for growth and independence.

As Tampa Bay continues to position itself as a region defined by innovation and collaboration, nonprofit organizations like Gigi’s Playhouse play a critical role in strengthening the social foundation that supports that growth.

The Giving Bowl provides a real-time example of that dynamic in action.

With donations resetting each round and outcomes determined by community participation, Round 3 represents a pivotal moment for Gigi’s Playhouse Tampa. The organization is now calling on the Tampa Bay community — including business leaders, corporate partners, and residents — to rally behind the mission and help advance the Playhouse into the final round.

For Gigi’s Playhouse Tampa, the opportunity extends beyond funding. It is a chance to elevate awareness, strengthen partnerships, and reinforce the role that inclusive programming plays in building a more connected and resilient community.
